Long Beach teen to take first steps post diving accident.

A teenager from Long Beach who was paralyzed following a diving incident on July 4 is preparing to walk for the first time as part of an incredible recovery journey. Known to his friends as Sandro, Alessandro Apuzzo suffered a severe spinal cord injury that crushed his vertebrae during the accident. The 15-year-old received treatment from trauma and neurosurgery specialists, as well as intensive rehabilitation at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital. On Wednesday morning, Apuzzo will take his inaugural steps outside the hospital where he healed, accompanied by loved ones, friends, and the medical teams who assisted in his progress. Joining them will be the lifeguard who rescued Apuzzo from the water, as well as the first responders who transported him to the hospital. Prior to the incident, Apuzzo was a student-athlete, participating in water polo competitions across Southern California and engaging in outdoor activities such as climbing, bodyboarding, and surfing.
