Local family races to bring son home after ATV accident in The Bahamas
A local family is working urgently to bring their son back to the United States after a serious ATV accident during a trip to the Bahamas left him hospitalized with severe injuries. Nehemiah Smith, known to family and friends as “Nemo,” recently enlisted in the Army National Guard. What was meant to be a celebratory cruise and time with friends has now turned into a medical emergency overseas. According to family members, Smith was involved in an ATV crash while visiting the Bahamas, striking a pole before being thrown from the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit, where doctors worked to stabilize him. His mother immediately traveled to the Bahamas to be by his side as he received emergency treatment. While his condition has stabilized, relatives said his recovery is far from complete and significant medical challenges remain ahead. Doctors have advised the family that Smith will require additional surgeries that can only be performed in the United States. However, transporting him home is complicated due to the severity of his injuries. Commercial air travel is not an option, forcing the family to explore costly medical transport services and specialized care during the transfer. Along with mounting hospital expenses overseas, the family is now facing the financial burden of ongoing treatment and logistics needed to safely bring him back home. Pastor Michael Young of City of Grace Church, who knows Smith personally, described him as a positive and determined young man. “Well, this is a young man that I have a personal relationship with, have genuine personal love for. So, when we heard about the accident and tragedy with him being out the country, obviously, you know, it was moments of worry, moments of genuine concern,” said Young. Young also said Smith has been deeply supported by faith and community encouragement throughout the ordeal. “I think Nehemiah is just an overwhelmingly positive young man. I think Nehemiah is overwhelmed by the support just like his mother and father is. I think Nehemiah is very appreciative. I think Nehemiah is still a young man who has great aspirations for his life,” he added. As the Smith family continues coordinating medical arrangements and facing growing expenses, they are asking for prayers and financial support from the community to help bring Nehemiah “Nemo” Smith home for the next stage of his recovery. What began as a promising milestone in a young soldier’s life has become a fight for stability, healing, and a safe return home.
