Lakeland man causes violent I-4 crash, flips car through highway sign: FHP

PLANT CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — A 37-year-old Lakeland man is facing felony charges after causing a serious crash in Plant City on Saturday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Just before 8 a.m., Jeffery Anglin was speeding down Interstate 4 in a silver SUV when he flew past a state trooper, and a pursuit began. The trooper caught up to him and attempted a traffic stop, with lights and sirens activated, but Anglin continued to flee. An arrest report from FHP said the vehicle broke 100 mph in a 70-mph zone. Anglin was recklessly swerving through traffic and using the shoulder to pass, and witnesses later told FHP that he was flashing his lights at the cars in front of him. Video from the trooper's patrol car shows the SUV trying to pass the car in front of it on the shoulder, resulting in a violent crash. The car in front of it, a black SUV, appeared to try to get out of the way of the pursuit by going onto the shoulder, but because Anglin was trying to pass on the shoulder, the two cars collided. The black car spun out across all three lanes of the highway, while the suspect's car flipped multiple times before taking out a highway sign and landing in the grassy area off the interstate. Anglin's passenger, a 37-year-old woman, was seriously injured in the crash, the arrest report said. After being extracted from the car by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, she was transported to a nearby hospital with a broken femur, among other injuries. The arrest report did not say if the occupants of the vehicle Anglin hit were injured. Anglin was charged with reckless driving with serious injury, fleeing to elude resulting in serious bodily injury, and operating a vehicle at 100 mph or more.
