KHP: Passing attempt leads to fatal crash in south-central Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Texas woman was killed following a head-on collision in Edwards County Thursday afternoon. The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 50, about ½ east of the Kansas Highway 19 junction. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2020 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Route 50 when it attempted to pass a semi and collided head-on with a westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. The impact caused the Jeep to spin counterclockwise and strike the semi. The driver of the Jeep — Sara Garza, 34, of Texas — was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to an area hospital with suspected serious injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to KHP. The semi driver, a 67-year-old man, was uninjured.
