Johnsonville pump house accident deemed cause of death by coroner
An investigation is currently ongoing in Florence County following the accidental death of a 68-year-old man who was trapped in a pump house in the Johnsonville area. The incident occurred on Monday evening, and emergency crews were called to the scene at about 6:30 p.m. The man, identified as Luther Ward, was found without a pulse and firefighters had to remove part of the pump house wall to free him. Despite efforts to save him, Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. The Florence County Coroner determined his death to be accidental due to positional asphyxiation. The man had a residence nearby, and authorities are still looking into the circumstances that led to his entrapment. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
