Increase in fatalities on dangerous roads in Sacramento in early 2026.
The beginning of the new year has seen a tragic start, with four more individuals losing their lives in car accidents over the weekend on Sacramento streets. Safety experts point out that these incidents occurred on roads widely known for their hazardous speeds and intersections. The fatalities included a pedestrian on Arden Way, three passengers in a two-car collision on Northgate Boulevard, a man struck while crossing Fruitridge Road, and a woman in a crash on Power Inn Road. With a total of seven fatalities in less than two weeks, the year has certainly started on a somber note. City Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum expressed concern about the need for more preventive measures against car accidents, stating that traffic engineers are actively seeking ways to enhance street safety. Isaac Gonzalez, founder of Slow Down Sacramento, highlighted that the locations of the accidents were expected since they are major roads prone to collisions. Despite receiving funding in 2024 for safety upgrades on Fruitridge Road and Arden Way, significant projects like those on Folsom Boulevard and Howe Avenue are still pending due to the substantial costs involved. While these projects may take time, the city is implementing smaller-scale safety measures like enhancing crosswalk visibility and lowering speed limits in some areas to ensure pedestrian safety. Mayor Kevin McCarty aims to utilize technology such as speed sensors and red light cameras to enforce traffic regulations effectively. With an alarming tally of 40 fatalities in vehicle accidents in 2025, advocates are fearful that 2026 could exceed this figure if immediate action is not taken to enhance traffic safety.
