Impact of deadly plane crash on north Wichita 61 years ago

In Wichita, Kansas, 61 years ago, a tragic plane crash took the lives of 30 individuals and deeply affected a neighborhood in north Wichita. This unfortunate event occurred on January 16, 1965, when a Boeing KC-135A-BN Stratotanker departing from McConnell Air Force Base failed to climb in altitude, crashing into a residential area near 20th and Piatt streets. The crew of seven, stationed at Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base in western Oklahoma, all lost their lives in the incident. The impact also resulted in the deaths of 23 individuals on the ground, with 27 others injured and numerous homes destroyed. In 1971, a portion of land close to the crash site was transformed into Piatt Memorial Park. Moreover, in 2007, a 22-foot granite memorial with the names of the victims was erected in the park to honor their memory.
