Highway 99 reopens after a large pileup.

A section of Highway 99 measuring three miles long was shut down for over five hours on Saturday due to a major collision caused by thick fog in Tulare County, located about 40 miles north of Bakersfield. According to the California Highway Patrol, 59 vehicles were part of the crash that happened around 8 a.m. The road was reopened in the afternoon. Some individuals suffered minor to moderate injuries and a few were transported to a nearby hospital. CHP Visalia confirmed receiving numerous reports of accidents on both the north and southbound lanes starting at 8:17 a.m. The County of Tulare advised against traveling during dense fog and cautioned against relying solely on automatic headlights. The Tulare County Fire Department stated that the closure extended from Avenue 24 to the Kern County border in both directions. The National Weather Service released a fog alert for the San Joaquin Valley on Saturday, covering portions of Highway 99. Conversely, parts of the eastern U.S. are facing severe winter weather systems.
