High school track team in California hit by driver causing injuries of 8 students
Eight students from a California high school's track team were injured in a collision on Wednesday when the driver, believed to be under the influence, drove off the road. The incident took place near Harbor Boulevard and North Street in Anaheim at approximately 3 p.m., according to police. The young athletes, aged between 16 and 17, were hit while waiting at a traffic light during a training run. Seven of them sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. An adult coach was present during the incident. The driver, Anthony Alva-Palafox, 27, was reported to have veered off the road and struck the group while driving on a green light. Authorities suspect DUI as a factor in the crash as Alva-Palafox showed signs of intoxication and was also injured. Investigations are ongoing, including determining the level of alcohol and drugs in his system. The California Representative, Lou Correa, gave an update on the students' conditions, mentioning that they are recovering, though one student is awaiting further medical test results. Thoughts and prayers have been extended to the affected families by both Correa and the Anaheim Union High School District. Police impounded Alva-Palafox's car for further investigation, including a pending search warrant to assess possible evidence. Factors contributing to the crash, such as speed, are also being looked into by authorities.
