‘He should have made it to school that day’: friends of 9-year-old killed in Royal train accident still pushing for change
ROYAL, Ill. (WCIA) -- Almost three years after a nine-year-old was killed in a train accident in Royal, his family and friends are still pushing for changes at the intersection where it happened. Back in September of 2023, Easton Wilsey was riding his bike when he crossed the tracks near Main Street in the Village of Royal. While his family and friends continue to mourn, they are always working hard to protect other families to feel this pain. One of the families' best friends, Megan Barron, has started a petition to change this railroad crossing where it happened. She said they've been fighting for safety updates since the accident happened, and believes this could help save even more lives. "The risk is still there. It's still very real. So, we felt like we had to jump in and make this petition to try to impact change," said Barron, "It's incredibly important for us to continue to advocate for this until we actually see change. So we won't stop until we do." Barron is hoping even more people sign their name in support. You can find the petition here. She also wants to highlight the ways people are remembering Easton's life -- not just his death -- including the Easton Wilsey Memorial Baseball Tournament which took place back in June of this year.
