Giraffe dies in tragic incident at zoo
A giraffe born at the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina has passed away due to a tragic accident. Kiko, the first giraffe born at the zoo in 2012, had been living at the Toronto Zoo in Canada, where the incident occurred. Kiko, a Masai giraffe, was exploring a new area in his habitat when he got caught in a closing door, resulting in fatal injuries. The Toronto Zoo is conducting a full examination and investigation into the incident. The zoo expressed its commitment to learning from this tragedy and preventing such incidents in the future. Kiko had been receiving special care for a foot injury and had a tailored routine, making his unexpected death particularly difficult for the Wildlife Care team. Masai giraffes are endangered, with an estimated population of about 43,000 in the wild. Kiko had been paired with female giraffe Mstari and had sired two calves, with a third one expected soon. The Toronto Zoo is mourning the loss of Kiko and focusing on supporting their team during this challenging time.
