Georgia, 38-Year-Old flees ICE Traffic Stop and Causes Fatal Crash
A Guatemalan driver fleeing a traffic stop carried out by ICE agents in Georgia lost control of his vehicle, crashing into another car and killing a teacher who was on her way to work. Oscar Vasquez Lopez, the driver accused of causing the crash near Savannah, was taken into custody on charges including vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. According to federal officials, the 38-year-old is in the United States illegally. The incident Immigration officers were seeking Lopez to enforce a 2024 removal order issued by an immigration judge, ICE spokesperson Lindsay Williams said Tuesday. She emphasized that Lopez has no other prior criminal record. Initially, after seeing the flashing lights of federal authorities, the 38-year-old stopped at the checkpoint. However, as officers were approaching his vehicle, he made a U-turn and ran a traffic light before crashing into another car. “Based on preliminary findings, we believe the pursuit was relatively brief in terms of time and distance,” said Betsy Nolen, spokesperson for the Chatham County Police Department, noting that the investigation is ongoing. Who the victim was Following the crash, Chatham County officials identified the victim as Linda Davis, a special education teacher at Herman W. Hesse Elementary School. “She dedicated her career to ensuring that every child felt supported, valued, and capable of achieving success,” said the school’s principal, Alonna McMullen. “Her kindness, patience, and enthusiasm created a nurturing environment for her students and inspired those around her.” The accident occurred less than half a mile from the school. Although students were off on Monday for Presidents Day, teachers had reported to work. Davis was driving to the school when her car was allegedly struck by Lopez’s vehicle, according to the latest reports. The Chatham County Police Department said in a statement that it was not aware of the ICE operation or the checkpoint involving the 38-year-old Guatemalan man. Chester Ellis, chairman of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, noted that local police are bound by a policy allowing vehicle pursuits only when officers believe a suspect has committed or is attempting to commit a serious felony. However, he said that if ICE had requested their assistance, county officers could have helped prevent the suspect’s escape without engaging in a pursuit that endangered other road users.
