Former Braves minor league player accused of causing deadly hit-and-run on I-75

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA)— An 18-year-old was arrested after a fatal hit-and-run on Interstate 75 in Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol announced. FHP located the black Ford Mustang that was believed to have veered from the left lane to the center, where it hit the side of a Chevy Trailblazer SUV before the Chevy collided with a semi truck around 6:30 a.m. near Exit 220. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jonathan Matos Morales, 18, of Cocoa, Florida, was arrested for vehicular homicide and leaving a crash scene involving death. According to the Atlanta Braves, Matos Morales was a former player with their minor league team. The impact of the crash caused the semi to go across the roadway and overturn before coming to a stop in the median and across all three lanes. The driver of the semi, a 34-year-old from New Smyrna Beach, died in the crash, and the driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries. According to FHP, Matos Morales stopped momentarily before taking off on I-75 south Monday morning. Matos Morales was arrested and booked into the Manatee County Jail. Statement from the Atlanta Braves organization: "We are aware that a player who was formerly in our minor league system is under investigation related to a fatal accident that occurred yesterday in Manatee County.  Our organization is cooperating fully with authorities and will not have any further comment at this time. Our condolences go to the loved ones of all who were involved."
