Fatal single-vehicle crash leaves 2 dead in West Virginia
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash around 9:30 a.m. on May 13, 2026. Investigators said a pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Matthew Cornell, of Charleston, was traveling on Kanawha State Forest Drive when it went off the roadway and hit a tree. Authorities said the truck then overturned and came to rest on its top in a creek bed. The passenger was identified as 55-year-old Tracey Cornell, also of Charleston. Officials said both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office also reminded drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts while traveling in a motor vehicle.
