Fatal pedestrian crash in Beekman under investigation

BEEKMAN, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal car-pedestrian crash in Beekman. According to deputies, the pedestrian, 39-year-old Marissa Burke, was hit by a car on Route 55. Investigators said deputies responded to State Route 55 near Gardner Hollow Road around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Burke was reportedly crossing the highway when she was hit by a westbound car. A preliminary investigation determined that after leaving a Dutchess County LOOP bus and crossing the street, she was hit by a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. According to deputies, they believe the primary factor of the crash was failing to yield to pedestrians. Burke was transported to the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver and sole occupant of the Jeep was not injured in the crash. According to deputies, as of Friday morning, no charges have been filed. The investigation, however, remains ongoing by the sheriff's office and the crash investigation unit. Route 55 was closed for approximately three hours while officers conducted the initial investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's office at (845) 486-3860.
