Fatal motorcycle crash claims life of 30-year-old man

HAWAII ISLAND, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Hawaii Island Police are investigating a traffic collision that left one man dead. On Wednesday evening, June 3, just before 5:30 p.m., police said a motorcycle was heading west on Kahakai Boulevard near the intersection of Niuhi Street when a motor vehicle heading east on Kahakai Boulevard attempted to make a left turn onto Niuhi Street. The motorcycle struck the car. Authorities said the motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man of Pahoa, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. He was unresponsive at the scene and transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the motor vehicle, a 36-year-old male, was not injured as a result of the collision, but was arrested for the following offenses: Police reported that speed, alcohol and/or drugs and inattention appear to be contributing factors in this incident and the investigation is ongoing. This is the 14th traffic fatality of 2026 compared to 13 traffic fatalities this same time last year.
