Fatal hit-and-run involving pedestrian in Drake neighborhood, per authorities
A 40-year-old man tragically lost his life on Tuesday evening in Des Moines' Drake neighborhood after being hit by a vehicle. Authorities are seeking the driver who fled the area after the incident took place. The police and fire departments responded to the situation at the intersection of 31st Street and University Avenue just after 6 p.m. upon receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck. The man sustained critical injuries and despite receiving immediate medical attention, including CPR, he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The vehicle involved in the accident had left the scene before emergency personnel arrived. Des Moines police are urging anyone who might have information regarding the incident to contact them immediately. This unfortunate event is the 13th traffic-related fatality and the fifth pedestrian-involved fatality in Des Moines in 2025.
