Fatal Crash on I-95 in Brevard County Sparks Vegetation Fire, Forces Evacuations
A deadly crash on Interstate 95 north of Mims has paralyzed traffic and sparked a vegetation fire that forced families from their homes on Thursday afternoon. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. at mile marker 232 in the northbound lanes. The severity of the incident led authorities to shut down the interstate in both directions to allow for emergency response and an investigation. As of late Thursday, all lanes of I-95 north of Deering Parkway remain blocked. FHP is currently diverting traffic away from the area, though officials warn that significant delays are expected to persist. “Both directions of travel on I-95 north of Deering Pkwy are currently blocked due to a fatal crash,” the FHP stated in a social media alert. “Traffic is being diverted in the area. Drivers need to prepare for traffic delays.”Traffic cameras from the scene captured images of what appeared to be an overturned truck emitting heavy smoke. The impact of the crash did more than just halt traffic; it ignited a fast-moving vegetation fire. According to a spokesperson for Brevard County, the blaze broke out near Blounts Ridge and Aurantia roads. Brevard County Fire Rescue remains on the scene battling the flames. The fire's proximity to residential areas prompted the emergency evacuation of two homes as a precautionary measure.
