Fatal Crash Involving Car and Disabled Tractor-Trailer on Maine Turnpike

Maine State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision on the Maine Turnpike that claimed the life of a woman from Massachusetts. The crash, which occurred on Interstate 95 southbound in York near mile 5, involved a 2014 Toyota sedan colliding with a stationary 2022 Western Star tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane due to a mechanical issue. The driver of the sedan, identified as 81-year-old Janice Goldsmith of Needham, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. State police reported that the driver of the tractor-trailer had properly placed reflective warning triangles before the accident. The incident caused traffic disruptions, with I-95 south reduced to one lane for about three hours and later limited to two lanes for an additional two hours. The on-ramp to the highway's southbound side at Exit 7 was shut down for approximately 90 minutes. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as authorities work to determine its cause.
