Fatal collision between train and herd kills seven elephants in India

A tragic incident occurred in India when a herd of elephants was hit by a high-speed train as they were crossing the tracks, resulting in the death of seven elephants and injuries to a calf. The collision caused the train to derail, although fortunately, there were no human casualties. The accident took place in a forested area southeast of Assam's capital city, Guwahati, a region where railway tracks are known to be frequented by elephants, although not a designated elephant corridor. Unfortunately, such accidents are not uncommon in the state, with an average of 20 elephant deaths reported in railway collisions each year. Efforts are being made to address this issue, such as reducing train speeds in wildlife corridors and implementing advanced surveillance systems to prevent such tragedies.
