Fatal car accident on Christmas morning in Athens area
The Athens-Clarke County police are currently looking into a tragic incident where a driver lost their life in a car crash on Christmas morning. The accident occurred at the junction of Barnett Shoals Road and Gaines School Road. According to reports, a 2018 Toyota Camry was speeding southbound on Barnett Shoals Road when it veered off the road at the intersection, crashed into a tree in Synovus Bank's parking lot, and then caught fire. The driver was fatally injured, although official confirmation of their identity is pending. This unfortunate event is the ninth fatal crash this year in Athens-Clarke County, contributing to a total of 13 traffic-related deaths in 2025.
