Fatal accident as pick-up truck collides with car during police chase

A tragic event unfolded on Saturday in Stoughton, resulting in the death of a man and serious injuries to a woman after a pickup truck crashed into their car during a police pursuit. The incident began when authorities in Brockton tried to stop 26-year-old Jason Ortiz just before 10:45 a.m. The pursuit continued into Stoughton, where the pickup was driving recklessly and avoiding police, according to Stoughton Police. The chase culminated in a collision between the pickup truck driven by Ortiz and a sedan at the intersection of Prospect Pleasant Street. The sedan was occupied by an elderly man and woman from Stoughton. The man succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital, and the woman was transported to a Boston hospital for serious injuries. Ortiz and another individual fled the scene after the crash, but Stoughton Police were able to apprehend one suspect shortly after, with the other located following an extended search involving K-9 units and the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing. Ortiz now faces several charges, including motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, among others, and will appear in Stoughton District Court on Monday. Investigations into the crash are ongoing by both Massachusetts State Police and Stoughton Police.
