Drunk driver sentenced for killing former Navy captain in Oregon City crash
In November 2024, a tragic car accident on South Clackamas River Drive in Oregon City resulted in the loss of retired U.S. Navy Captain David Collins's life and inflicted severe injuries on his wife, Susan Lawver. Chad Van Lom, a 37-year-old man from Cascade Locks, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty in December 2025 to second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, and DUII. Van Lom, who was driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.22 percent, crossed the center line while traveling at 68 miles per hour, leading to the fatal collision. The crash devastated the Collins family, leaving them shattered by the sudden loss and trauma. As part of his sentence, Van Lom must pay over $233,000 in restitution, have his license suspended for life, and face the profound remorse and guilt for the pain he caused. "Losing David was not just losing a husband; it was losing my partner, my safest place, and my best friend," Lawver mourned. The tragic incident has forever altered the lives of the Collins family and serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving.
