Driver of pickup charged in fatal crash Friday night on I-440 near Glenwood Avenue, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — During an ongoing investigation of a crash on I-440 West near Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh police said a man has been charged in a fatal crash in the same location at the same time. According to the Raleigh police Department, Jack Neville faces speeding citations and a misdemeanor death by vehicle charge after killing a man standing outside of his vehicle. Officers said in a news release Saturday that the first crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday night on the I-440 West near the Glen Eden Drive overpass near Glenwood Avenue. "The initial collision involved several vehicles, all of which had been moved to the shoulder of the roadway," a spokesperson with the police said. Officers determined in their preliminary investigation of the second crash that Neville was speeding in a Chevrolet Silverado and failed to reduce speed for traffic ahead as police was responding to a previous crash on I-440. "At the time, both the tow truck and police vehicles had their emergency lights activated," the spokesperson said. "No travel lanes were blocked, and traffic was continuing to flow past the scene." Officers said Neville struck a Pontiac Vibe, which then struck a man, identified as Eduardo Valdez, while he was standing beside his vehicle on the outside of the overpass's shoulder. Officers said Valdez was pronounced dead by first responders who were already at the scene. Raleigh police announced the charges for Neville on Saturday morning following the crash. They said the investigation continues.
