Driver of Anthony Joshua charged for dangerous driving following deadly accident in Nigeria

Nigerian police have charged the driver involved in a fatal crash with British boxer Anthony Joshua for "reckless" and "dangerous driving causing death." The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, also faces charges for "driving without a valid national driver's licence" and "driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property." Bail was set at five million naira with two sureties, and he will remain in detention until the bail is met. The next court appearance is scheduled for January 20. This incident highlights the common occurrence of road accidents in Nigeria, with the nation recording 5,421 deaths in 9,570 road accidents in 2024. Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, was in the car with two friends when it crashed into a stationary truck. Sadly, the friends, identified as Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives. Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. Joshua was taken to Lagos' Lagoon Hospital for observation and was released on New Year's Eve. The accident occurred nine days after Joshua's non-title bout victory over YouTube personality Jake Paul in Miami.
