Driver injured in Philadelphia crash after losing control of car on snow and ice, police report
Three individuals, one of whom was a teenager, sustained injuries after a driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a utility pole during a sudden snow squall in Philadelphia on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the junction of G Street and East Wyoming Avenue in Juniata Park. According to authorities, a 21-year-old man driving a red Honda Civic skidded on the snowy and icy road surface, leading to the collision. The driver and a female passenger in their twenties were reported to be in critical condition, while a 17-year-old boy seated in the rear of the vehicle was listed in stable condition at the hospital. An investigation into the accident is currently underway. In Fairmount, Alex Cook struggled with icy conditions while clearing snow off his car, noting that the sidewalks were dangerously slippery. Despite plans to visit his mother on New Year's Day, Cook decided to delay his trip due to the icy conditions on the streets. Other residents also described treacherous road conditions caused by the snow squall, with concerns about rear-ending vehicles on icy back roads. City officials reported that efforts were being made to treat the roads, but the cold weather impeded significant melting. Some drivers venturing out early faced challenges on the roads, as observed on Lincoln Drive and at various locations in West Philly. The Streets Department and PennDOT teams were actively salting and treating roads to improve safety, reminding residents to watch out for black ice patches while driving.
