Driver dead after car smashes into pillar on US-64 in Nash County, officials say

NASHVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Nash County officials are investigating the circumstances around a fatal crash on a major highway. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation went out around 4:20 a.m. Saturday, alerting drivers that a crash had closed U.S. Highway 64 East near mile marker 458. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told CBS 17 that the Nashville Police Department requested their assistance upon arriving to a single-vehicle crash on the side of US-64. According to troopers, a white Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed on US-64 East when it ran off the road towards the median, overcorrected and struck the pillars that held up the US-64 ALT overpass. Troopers said the Charger separated into three parts due to the impact of the crash. The driver, who was the sole occupant in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to troopers. According to NCDOT, US-64 East reopened several hours later Saturday morning. Nashville police, who are leading the investigation into the crash, are withholding the identification of the deceased driver until the next of kin has been notified.
