Driver crashes into brick column at Clayton store, spinning car around at Lowes Foods

CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — Police in Clayton are investigating after a driver crashed a car into a column outside Lowes Foods at Clayton Crossing late Friday morning. The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. just outside Lowes Foods at 11711 Clayton Boulevard, according to the Clayton Police Department and a nearby store owner. According to Clayton police, a vehicle struck one of the building columns at the Lowes Food and a second vehicle. The driver who struck the column and the second vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries, according to Clayton police. Police said the driver of the second vehicle was not injured. According to Patrick Kelly, who owns Pauper's Books & More next to Lowes, a man was driving a small red car that crashed into the brick base of a column. The crash caused the car to spin around and face the opposite direction, according to Kelly. Shoppers and staff in the bookstore were "scared" by the massive sound of the crash, he said. "We definitely heard it, we felt it," Kelly said. Photos from Pauper's Books & More showed major damage to the car and brick column. The photos show the vehicle that was struck was a Ford Bronco. According to Clayton police, the Lowes building was determined to be "structurally sound". The investigation remains ongoing as of Friday afternoon. More information will be released when it becomes available.
