18-Wheeler Crash Shuts Down Highway 78 in Pell City

A crash involving an 18-wheeler has shut down a section of Highway 78 in Pell City, according to the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency. Officials said emergency crews, including the Pell City Police Department and Pell City Fire Department, are on the scene of the collision. Highway 78/Cogswell Avenue, is blocked in both directions between Truss Ferry Road and Bamberg Drive. Around 10:30 a.m. the sheriff's office said crews will begin pumping the contents of the truck and nearby resident were asked to evacuate. “For safety reasons, all residents and individuals within a 2,000-foot radius of the incident will be required to evacuate the area for a minimum of two hours, possibly longer,” the sheriff’s office said. Emergency responders were on scene coordinating operations and ensuring public safety. The sheriff’s office urged people to avoid the area and follow all instructions from emergency personnel. Officials said they will continue to provide updates as information becomes available and will notify residents once the situation has been resolved and the area is safe to re-enter. No information about injuries or what led to the crash has been released.
