Driver charged with DUI manslaughter after fatal crash on I-75 in Sarasota
Two individuals lost their lives in a collision on Sunday on I-75 in Sarasota, and a man has been charged with DUI manslaughter by the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident involved a Toyota Camry and a Nissan Pathfinder traveling north on I-75 near mile marker 203. As a result of the collision, the SUV struck a tree after being hit by the sedan. According to Trooper Ken Watson, the sedan driver, Fred Donaldson, was found to have a blood alcohol level significantly above the legal limit. Donaldson, 41, from Ohio, was arrested at the scene. The trooper emphasized the importance of avoiding driving under the influence, especially with upcoming holidays. Sadly, both occupants of the SUV were pronounced dead at the crash site. Donaldson is currently in custody at the Sarasota County Jail without bond leading up to his pre-trial detention hearing on December 19. Trooper Watson also highlighted the availability of services like Uber and Lyft as alternatives to driving under the influence.
