Driver charged in fatal West Allis crash on 76th and Morgan Street in Milwaukee
A 21-year-old West Allis man named Drake Wallis has been formally charged with second-degree reckless homicide related to a fatal accident on Milwaukee's south side that claimed the life of another driver early this month. Wallis appeared in court on Monday, Jan. 12, and could face over 30 years in prison and $110,000 in fines if found guilty on both counts. The incident occurred on Jan. 7 at 76th and Morgan, where Wallis allegedly caused the death of Dmonte Owens by driving his black BMW at high speed through a red light and colliding with Owens' vehicle as he attempted a left turn. Owens succumbed to his injuries at Froedtert Hospital, with multiple blunt-force injuries listed as the cause of death. Evidence from a witness's dash camera and the BMW's airbag control module indicated Wallis was travelling at around 62 miles per hour and did not apply the brakes before the impact. Investigators also reported the presence of marijuana inside the BMW, and Wallis, who was aware of his suspended driver's license, admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day. Wallis' prior driving record includes multiple speeding violations, including a reckless driving citation in 2024.
