Driver arrested after allegedly hitting multiple pedestrians in Broussard
UPDATE 6:58 p.m.: Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office requested Louisiana State Police Troop I to assist with a crash involving multiple pedestrians in the area of Savannaket Street and Melancon Road in Broussard. The investigation resulted in the arrest of 57-year-old Todd Landry of Jeanerette. Troopers arrested Landry and booked him into the Iberia Parish jail for Driving while impaired (1st Offense) and First-degree negligent injuring (18 counts), careless operation, and open container. During the Lao New Year Parade, the vehicle Landry was driving struck multiple pedestrians. During the investigation, Landry showed signs of impairment and ultimately submitted a breath sample indicating a BAC of 0.137g%. This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available. UPDATE 5:05 p.m.: The Louisiana Lao New Year Festival issued a statement on their Facebook Page: "We are profoundly saddened by the news of the incident near the festival grounds. We are awaiting additional details from authorities as they become available. All security resources have been redirected to the scene, and we currently do not have security personnel available due to the circumstances" Lao Festival officials said. Festival coordinators say they have canceled the music programs for tonight for the public's safety, including no alcohol sales. Vendors will remain open until 9 p.m. "We are praying for the victims and for their families during this difficult time," Lao Festival officials said. On Sunday they will reopen only the religious services of the festival, and vendors will stay open. Security will be reinforced. UPDATE 4:11 p.m.: Deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating an incident that occurred at the corner of Savannakhet and Melancon Road. Several individuals sustained injuries, some of which are believed to be serious. The driver is currently in custody. Based on the preliminary investigation, this does not appear to be an intentional act. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. UPDATE 4:10 p.m.: Louisiana Attorney General, Liz Murrill issued a statement: "I’m praying for all those injured and impacted by this terrible tragedy and will be following up with responding law enforcement agencies to offer support," said Murrill. UPDATE 3:46 p.m.: Governor Jeff Landry issued a statement: "Sharon and I are praying for all those affected, and are grateful for the first responders who have responded to the scene," said Landry. UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: According to Acadian Ambulance, they transported a total of 11 patients by ground and two patients by air. IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- According to the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, they are responding to an incident involving a vehicle and a crowd in Iberia Parish possibly near a festival. According to Acadian Ambulance's Twitter Page they responded to a vehicle hitting several parade participants. Their initial response was 7 ambulances and 1 Air Med helicopter, and they are sending 3 more ambulances and an additional helicopter, officials said. We'll have further details as more information is released.
