Driver arrested after 6-year-old fatally struck by car in Frayser

This story has been updated. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A woman accused of fatally striking a six-year-old boy with her vehicle in Frayser on Thursday has been arrested, according to Memphis Police. Kenyunte W. Goss is charged with driving while license suspended, revoked, or cancelled and financial responsibility. Officers reported that around 4 p.m. Thursday, they responded to a pedestrian who was struck at Signal Street and Whitney Avenue. The boy's family was too upset to speak, but WREG spoke with a neighbor who described what she heard and saw. "Well, I was walking through the house, and I heard an impact. I thought it was a car wreck," explained Hellen Carter. Carter lives on Whitney Avenue in Frayser, close enough to see and hear neighbors traumatized after a young boy was struck by a car Thursday afternoon. "When I came out, his family was screaming and running up and down the street, and she said a six-year-old baby was hit by the car," Carter stated. "She said he was playing with a ball. That's all I know, and they were crowded over there, and they were covering him up, and cars were everywhere." Police say Goss was traveling westbound on Whitney Avenue when the front end of her Chrysler 200 struck the victim, who was located in the westbound lane of traffic on Whitney Avenue. Goss remained at the scene. The child was transported to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead. Carter still can't believe what happened and added that vehicles are always speeding by her house, and accidents are commonplace. "It was loud. It was a horrible impact," she said. I thought they done had a wreck out here again." She mentioned that crashed vehicles normally end up in her front yard. Balloons and stuffed animals are the only reminders on the street of Thursday's chaos. "It was covered with people, there was a lot of people," she shared. "A couple of vans came around here, and it was the National Guard that came out of the vans, which shocked me, but it was a horrible scene." Goss is being held on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be in court Monday morning.
