Deputies: Driver ejected, killed in Port Sheldon Township crash

PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say a driver was ejected and killed in a rollover crash in Port Sheldon Township Wednesday morning. It happened around 7 a.m. on Van Buren Street near 152nd Avenue. Van Buren Street has been under construction since December, according to the Ottawa County Road Commission, as crews install a water transmission line. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office explained that the westbound lane was closed as of Wednesday morning, adding that the westbound lane was "all sand" and the eastbound lane consisted of gravel. Deputies said the driver, a 21-year-old man from Grand Rapids, was going west in the eastbound lane. They said he drove off the gravel shoulder into the sand and lost control, causing the car to roll over. The driver was ejected. Investigators believe he wasn't wearing a seat belt. The man died on scene, according to the sheriff's office. His name was not immediately released. Deputies continue to investigate the crash. If you know anything, you're asked to contact Ottawa County Central Dispatch Authority at 1.800.249.0911.
