Deputies: 3 dead in wrong-way crash in Marne area

WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say three people were killed Friday morning in a wrong-way crash on I-96 in Wright Township. It happened around 3:25 a.m. on eastbound I-96 slightly west of exit 23, which leads to 16th Avenue. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, authorities received reports of a driver going west in the eastbound lanes. As they were responding, deputies said they found a head-on crash between two SUVs. The wrong-way driver, identified as a 24-year-old man, died on scene, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies said the two occupants of the other SUV also died on scene. The driver was described as a 53-year-old Muskegon woman and the passenger was described as a 50-year-old Muskegon man. No names were immediately released. The sheriff's office continues to investigate the crash. Traffic on eastbound I-96 was being rerouted at 48th Avenue in the Coopersville area. The highway reopened around 7:30 a.m. From late Thursday night to early Friday morning, a total of seven people were killed in separate crashes across West Michigan. Around 11:10 p.m. Thursday, two 17-year-olds were killed in a crash that involved four vehicles in Montcalm County. Around 1 a.m. Friday, a wrong-way crash on I-196 in Grand Rapids killed two drivers.
