Deadly train crash in southern Mexico kills 13 and injures many
A train accident in southern Mexico has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and left dozens injured. The incident occurred when the Interoceanic Train, which connects Oaxaca and Veracruz, derailed near Nizanda. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news, stating that 98 people had been injured, with five in serious condition. She has dispatched officials to the site to support affected families. The train, inaugurated in 2023 by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is part of a larger effort to improve train travel in southern Mexico and enhance infrastructure along the isthmus of Tehuantepec. The Mexican government aims to transform the region into a key trade corridor, connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans with ports and railway systems. The Interoceanic Train currently covers a distance of around 180 miles from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos.
