Deadly tractor-trailer crash on I-42 closes eastbound lanes, Clayton Fire Department says

CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) — Eastbound lanes of Interstate 42 are expected to remain closed through 6:30 p.m. Monday after a fatal truck turnover in Johnston County. NC State Highway Patrol officials have identified the driver who died in the crash as 55-year-old Robert Lee Williams of Selma. The truck, a cargo tank trailer, turned over at approximately 2:06 p.m. NCSHP officials said the tanker was driving eastbound and hauling "animal waste (fat)" when the tires went off the roadway to the left. Troopers said that Williams was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but that "driver inattention" and oversteering contributed to the crash. During the collision, the cargo tank trailer became detached from the cab, troopers added. The cab came to rest on its rooftop, while the cargo trailer came to rest partially in the roadway, also facing south. In a Facebook post made Monday afternoon, the fire department said all eastbound lanes of I-42, just east of Ranch Road, had closed. Traffic is being directed onto Ranch Road, according to Clayton fire, with drivers being asked to avoid the area while crews work to clear the roadway. Drivers who cannot avoid the area should expect delays.
