Deadly derailment of high-speed train in Spain leaves 21 dead
A tragic incident occurred in southern Spain on Sunday when a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train, resulting in at least 21 fatalities. The accident involved an evening train traveling between Malaga and Madrid, which went off the tracks and struck a train from Madrid heading to Huelva. The Spanish rail operator ADIF provided this information, while Spain's Civil Guard police reported the death toll. Emergency services in Andalucia indicated that approximately 25 individuals sustained severe injuries, with the regional Civil Protection chief mentioning the challenging location of the incident. Local residents showed support by providing blankets and water to the victims. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to the injured. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also shared her sympathy for those affected. As a result of the accident, train services between Madrid and Andalucian cities have been suspended for Monday, according to ADIF.
