Deadly crash shuts down northbound I-15 near SR-76, causing major traffic delays
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A fatal crash has forced the closure of all northbound lanes of Interstate 15 just north of State Route 76, creating significant delays for motorists in North County. According to California Highway Patrol's Oceanside Area Office, the incident was first reported just after 4 a.m. A full shutdown of northbound I-15 shortly followed in the impacted area as authorities launched an investigation. By 5:30 a.m., officials confirmed the closure remained in place, warning driver to expect heavy congestion and seek alternative routes. Suggested detours included Pala Temecula Road, Rice Canyon Road and Old Highway 395. At 6 a.m., there had been no change in condition. All northbound traffic continued to be diverted at SR-76 while investigators remained on scene. CHP reported that southbound lanes were also experiencing some delays due to "onlooker traffic," causing more freeway congestion. Around 7 a.m., CHP also reported that the westbound and eastbound SR-76 on-ramps to I-15 are closed for the response. Authorities have not yet released details about the number of vehicles involved or the identity of the victim. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for their morning commute. Officials say updates will be provided as more information becomes available. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
