CPD says driver at fault dies in hospital weeks after May 27 Chico crash
The Chico Police Department has released an update on the fatal crash that happened at at East Lassen Avenue and Esplanade on May 27,2026. The original report saw six vehicles involved in the crash and only one death. The crash occurred when a driver reportedly ran a red light at high speed and slammed into a stopped vehicle. The force of the crash pushed that vehicle through the intersection, causing it to hit several other vehicles waiting at the opposite red light. On June 9, 2026, CPD officials reported that the driver at fault had become the second person to die as a result of the incident. Thomas Sifton, 82, of Chico was originally taken to a local hospital after suffering severe injuries as a result of the crash. Sifton died over the weekend at Enloe Medical Center after remaining hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash.
