Court appearance for ex-RSU 13 bus driver charged in Rockland student's death
A former school bus driver in Maine, Jeffrey Colburn, has pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter charge in connection with a tragic Rockland crash that led to the death of 12-year-old Brayden Callahan, a student at Regional School Unit 13 (RSU 13). Colburn, 65, from Camden, appeared virtually in Knox County Superior Court following his arrest on a warrant issued by the District Attorney's Office. The fatal incident occurred on November 21, 2025, when Brayden was struck and killed by the school bus Colburn was driving. Reports indicate that Brayden was hit by both the front and rear tires of the bus as he was crossing the road after getting off at the stop. Colburn stated to authorities that he did not see Brayden, and it was noted that the bus's crossing arm was not deployed at the time of the tragedy. Brayden's family has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Colburn and RSU 13, citing safety and oversight failures. District Attorney Natasha Irving presented the case against Colburn, asserting that his negligence led to Brayden's death. Colburn, who is no longer employed by RSU 13, is now in custody at Two Bridges Regional Jail with bail set at $2,000. If released, he is prohibited from contacting Brayden's family and operating any commercial vehicle.
