Columbia County couple in critical condition after car crash
RED HOOK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Three people were sent to the hospital on Friday following a two-car crash in the village of Red Hook, according to the Red Hook Police Department. The incident reportedly occurred on South Broadway, directly across from Prince Street. A Red Hook police officer came upon the crash scene just after 11 a.m., finding one of the cars resting on its roof with people trapped inside, as well as an engine fire. The department said the officer immediately reported the incident to Dutchess County 911 and requested assistance from the Red Hook Fire Company and EMS. With the help of several good Samaritans, the officer was able to remove both people from the overturned car, according to police. The engine fire was reportedly also extinguished in less than two minutes. According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford was traveling southbound on South Broadway when the driver, identified as a 75-year-old Elizaville man, suffered a medical emergency. The Ford then reportedly crossed the double-yellow centerline, traveled onto the sidewalk for several hundred feet, and struck a rock wall before hitting a Toyota. The impact caused the Ford to become airborne and roll onto its roof, police said. The 75-year-old driver of the Ford, plus his 75-year-old wife, were taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital in critical condition, according to authorities. The driver of the Toyota was also reportedly taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. South Broadway was closed for over an hour as first responders worked at the scene. An investigation remains ongoing into the incident.
