Close calls persist in US skies a year after fatal Washington, DC, collision
A year ago, there was a tragic accident resulting in the loss of 67 lives when a commercial airplane and a military helicopter collided in a known safety risk area. Since then, multiple near-miss incidents continue to occur across the country, prompting leaders of the National Transportation Safety Board to raise concerns about other potential hazardous areas. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy emphasized the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place. Reports indicate there have been about 59 near mid-air collisions in the months following the crash last January. These incidents have taken place at various airports across the U.S. involving both helicopters and commercial airplanes. The NTSB highlighted systematic failures contributing to these accidents, including inadequate information on aeronautical charts, lack of awareness among pilots, and issues with air traffic control systems. Families of the victims have been advocating for reforms to prevent such tragedies from occurring again, with some progress already made but more actions needed moving forward.
