Close calls persist in US airspace one year after fatal Washington, DC, accident
A year ago, there was a tragic incident involving a commercial airplane and a military helicopter collision that resulted in the loss of 67 lives. Since then, near misses have continued to be a recurring issue nationwide, with safety leaders from the National Transportation Safety Board emphasizing the existence of other potential danger zones. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy expressed concern that despite raised warnings, authorities are not taking necessary actions to ensure safety in aviation. The data shows that in the nine months following the fatal crash, there have been at least 59 near mid-air collisions between commercial airplanes and other piloted aircraft during takeoff or landing. However, experts believe this number is likely an underestimate due to the voluntary reporting system. The incidents of near mid-air collisions involving helicopters have been prominent at various airports, including those in the northeastern region. Recommendations for enhancing safety protocols are being discussed in response to the ongoing concerns raised by NTSB investigations and advocacy efforts by families affected by such aviation tragedies.
