Chinese man accidentally breaks girlfriend's bone, then fakes car crash for insurance.
In China, a couple has been detained for reportedly fabricating a car collision to seek insurance compensation after the woman sustained a severe injury. The man, identified as Wang, is accused of causing harm to his girlfriend, surnamed Lan, during a playful act and later orchestrating a fake car crash to make an insurance claim. The couple, residing in Panzhihua city, had a long-term relationship but had frequent arguments. The incident occurred in June 2024 when Wang inadvertently caused Lan's chest fracture during a playful moment outside a relative's house. The couple, upon realizing the costly medical expenses, staged the accident to file an insurance claim. However, investigations by authorities revealed inconsistencies, such as the absence of impact damage on the vehicle and the remote location of the purported crash site. The police also discovered past conflicts between the couple and found suspicious images from the scene of the incident. Subsequent inquiries concluded that the accident was a sham orchestrated by Wang and Lan. Both individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of insurance fraud and may face a decade in prison and a substantial fine if convicted. Public reactions on Chinese social media expressed disdain for the couple's actions, emphasizing the corrosive effect on social trust and the wasted resources by law enforcement and insurance companies.
