Child seriously injured in ATV crash
MILAN TWP. — Three people were injured as a result of an SUV versus ATV crash on Saturday afternoon in Milan Township. At about 1:45 p.m., first responders were called to the 4000 block of Ohio 113 E. for the report of a traffic crash. They arrived to find an ATV on the south side of the road that had caught fire, according to a media release from the Sandusky Post Ohio State Highway Patrol. A white Toyota RAV4 was off the road to the north near a utility pole. The ATV was operated by a 13-year-old and entered the road from a private drive directly into the path of the Toyota, the release states. The SUV, operated by a Berlin Heights man, struck the ATV, then went off the road to the left, overturned and struck the pole, before coming to a rest on its wheels. EMTs responded to the scene and rendered aid to the 13-year-old ATV driver as well as their 10-year-old passenger. Both children were transported by ground ambulance to Fisher-Titus Medical Center. The 10-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries, according to the release, and was later flown by medical helicopter to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. The SUV's driver was evaluated by EMTs, but it is not clear if he was taken to the hospital. Ohio 113 East was closed between Wikel and River roads for about two hours while the crash was investigated, the scene cleaned and vehicles removed. As of late Saturday, the medical conditions of the three people involved in the crash are unknown. Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
