Chicago suburban resident accused of fatal hit-and-run, authorities report

A man from suburban Chicago is facing charges for allegedly not reporting a fatal crash and leaving the scene, police stated. Christian Antonio Vargas, 30, has been charged with failure to report an accident resulting in death and failure to provide information and assistance, as per Des Plaines police. These charges were brought on Jan. 22 after an extensive investigation. Authorities shared that Vargas was identified as the driver of a black Ford Focus that was involved in a deadly crash on July 27, 2024, by interviewing witnesses and examining forensic evidence. The tragic incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. at 967 S. Elmhurst Road and involved a collision between a motorcycle and the Ford. Emergency responders found the motorcyclist, Nico Watkins, 31, unresponsive on the roadway and attempted life-saving measures but unfortunately, Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. During the investigation, it was determined that the motorcycle was speeding northbound on Elmhurst Road when it hit the Ford exiting a plaza and trying to go southbound. The driver of the Ford reportedly fled on foot. Vargas was due to appear in court at the Skokie Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, but further details were not disclosed.
