Chattanooga man dies days after fiery crash at McCallie Tunnel

A Chattanooga man has died days after a crash and vehicle fire near the McCallie Tunnel. Chattanooga police say 28-year-old Marki Bonner died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in the June 13 crash. The wreck happened around 6:49 p.m. in the 2900 block of McCallie Avenue. According to a preliminary investigation, Bonner was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound toward the McCallie Tunnel when he lost control of the vehicle. Police say the car left the roadway, struck the opening wall of the tunnel and caught fire. Witnesses who saw the crash rushed to help. Investigators say bystanders were able to pull Bonner away from the burning vehicle before emergency crews arrived. Hamilton County EMS transported him to a local hospital with critical injuries. Five days later, on June 18, the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office notified Chattanooga police that Bonner had died.
