Charges pending after head-on I-95 crash in Robeson County that killed 3, highway patrol says

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) -- Charges are pending after three people were killed in a wrong-way head-on collision on Saturday in Robeson County, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said. The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 95 near the 5-mile marker, First Sgt. S.B. Lewis told News13. A preliminary investigation shows that a 2024 Mazda SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 when it crashed with a 2023 Hyundai SUV traveling northbound. The 2024 Mazda SUV came to a stop in the road facing northeast, while the 2023 Hyundai traveled off the road to the left, came to a stop facing south, and caught fire, Lewis said. The driver of the Hyundai SUV has been identified as Anastasia Nicole Zervakis of Florida, Lewis said. Her age was not immediately available, but authorities said she was born in 2000. Zervakis was transported to UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, where she died a few hours later. Two passengers in Zervakis' vehicle also died, according to Lewis. The backseat passenger was identified as Gizelle Beniquez, also of Florida, who Lewis said was not properly restrained. She was born in 2018. The front-seat passenger's body was unidentifiable, so their body will be transported to the Raleigh Medical Examiner's Office for identification, Lewis said. The driver of the Mazda was airlifted to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, according to Lewis, who said speed was not considered a factor and impairment was not suspected for either driver. His condition was not immediately available. Count on News13 for updates.
