Car crashes into Waldorf church, building sustains serious damage
WALDORF, Md. (DC News Now) -- A church in Waldorf was seriously damaged after a car crashed into the building on Wednesday morning. The vehicle took out bricks and drywall and ended up parked inside a classroom. Joe Day is the treasurer at the Waldorf Church of Christ. He said his congregation is counting their blessings because the driver was not hurt. “We are very fortunate God is looking out and glad nobody got hurt. Material things can be replaced, but you can’t replace a person’s life”. Day explained that the church was empty when the crash happened. “When the car came in, it took out a wall between two classrooms in the fellowship room, and then it damaged portions of the wall on the other side, and another part of that room is damaged as well,” Day said. Police say the 79-year-old driver will not face any charges; investigators are ruling the crash an accident. “That’s why we have insurance. When things like this happen, we are prepared, and the construction company already put up a wood barrier there so nobody can get in for safety reasons”. Day says the church congregation is keeping the driver in prayer. He is not sure how much it will cost to fix the damage.
